It was the first of its kind: waterproof, packable, and highly capable. Today’s Freerain22 is the third generation of that backpack. Designed with purpose and without compromise, the Freerain22 maintains its reputation for peak technical performance.

How waterproof is the Freerain22?
Bags with the Freerain name are built from waterproof materials with sealed seams and rolltop closures. Though not intended for intentional submersion, these bags are 100% weatherproof and will keep water out in the most extreme weather conditions when the rolltop is rolled at least 3 times.

Is the Freerain22 hydration compatible?
No. For hydration compatibility, we suggest the Freerain28, Beast18, or Beast28.

How do I pack up and stow the Freerain22?
We suggest folding the pack in thirds vertically and rolling up tightly from the bottom. Unzip the top closure so that air can escape as it is rolled up. For detailed instructions, the demo video below shows the full pack up.

Does this pack have a hip belt?
Yes, there is a removeable webbing hip belt.

How tall of a person will this backpack fit?
The Freerain22 has a lot of adjustability to accomodate most adults. The tallest person to have tested the Freerain28 is 6'3" but specific fit will depend greatly on the wearer's preference and torso length. The hip belt will accomodate up to 50" circumference.

Does this bag have a warranty?
Yes, this product is warrantied for 3 years. Bags in and out of warranty are eligible for repairs.

This pack is interesting

Over the course of a couple weeks I got to test this pack in a variety of ways - daypack around the city, resort ski backpack, grocery carry on bike. Here's some pros and cons.

Pros:
- For a resort ski bag it's super light and flexible. You almost forget it's there most the time even if you have some significant weight like water, sunscreen, layers, tools, keys, etc.
- It's very malleable and easy to pack in different configurations.
- The hip belt detaches and reattaches in the most amazing way. Every pack should use this.
- The attachment loops can be super handy in so many situations. The shoulder strap loops are in the perfect spot!
- It's very waterproof! I left it sitting in the snow with fleece layers inside for a long time and they didn't accumulate a lick of moisture.

Cons:
- You have to be extremely particular about how you pack this if you don't want to annoy your back
- Does not pack into the included "stuff sack" with any ease at all
- You have to blow air out of it before sealing otherwise it's a giant balloon.

I love the idea of a "completely" waterproof pack that's this packable but some kind of blow-out at the bottom could be nice so we don't have to leave the zipper open at the top if we don't want to wear a balloon. Otherwise this was a really fun pack to use and carry for a variety of adventures.

Very adjustable and silent

This pack is very adjustable. There is a tightener for everything and load lifting straps. All these straps keep the load on your back from rattling when you are doing brisk movements. Running, jumping and walking with this pack have very minute sound signatures and that is what I was looking for. I wanted something durable combined with water resistance and a quiet material and I think Matador did this beautifully in the Freerain22. Before this purchase I had bought a hyperlite porter and the dinema material was like I was walking with a huge bag of chips on my back. Durability means nothing if you cannot enjoy the outdoors because your pack sounds like someone is snacking away on a bag of very noisy chips. Thanks matador for providing a quiet and durable alternative.

Broke on the first use

I bought this for my son for Christmas 2023 and he used it on New Years Day for a short hike. The clasp broke while he was putting it on, so he didn't even get one use out of it. This is an expensive backpack and you'd expect to use it without having it break.

He loved the style, the weight and the durable construction of the straps so he is very disappointed and so am I.

Hey Linda, Sorry to hear about the issue. We use top quality YKK hardware on this bag so this shouldn't happen. Please email customer service so we can resolve this issue for you.
